A Brief History

Mathematics is not new to India. Infact, Indians have contributed enormously to the world in the field of mathematics. Vedic mathematics refers to a set of mathematical techniques that were rediscovered from the Vedas between the early 20th century and the late 20th century. These techniques are claimed to be derived from the Vedas, the ancient religious texts of India, includes methods for mental calculation, as well as techniques for solving algebraic equations, geometry, and calculus problems. Vedic Maths has spiked interest in India’s mathematical heritage and sparked further research and exploration into ancient Indian mathematical techniques.

Aryabhata (476–550 AD) was an Indian mathematician and astronomer. He is known for the Aryabhata, an astronomical treatise that also covers mathematics. Aryabhata gave the value of pi (π) correct to four decimal places and introduced the concept of sine in trigonometry.

Bhaskaracharya, or Bhaskara II (1114–1185 AD), was an Indian mathematician and astronomer. He was the leading mathematician of the 12th century and wrote the Siddhanta Shiromani, which is divided into four parts: Lilavati (arithmetic), Bijaganita (algebra), Goladhyaya (sphere), and Grahaganita (mathematical astronomy). His contributions include solutions to indeterminate equations, the concept of differentiation, and the approximation of π.

Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887–1920) was an Indian mathematician who made significant contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. Despite having almost no formal training in mathematics, Ramanujan independently discovered many results that were later proven by other mathematicians. He worked extensively on elliptic functions, modular forms, and the partition function

Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji, was a renowned Indian mathematician and spiritual leader who lived from 1884 to 1960. He is best known for his work in popularizing and systematizing Vedic Maths. He wrote a comprehensive text on the subject titled “Vedic Mathematics,” which presents the mathematical principles found in the ancient Vedas in a coherent and structured manner. The book covers various branches of mathematics, including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and calculus, and introduces techniques for mental calculation and problem-solving that are claimed to be simpler and more efficient than conventional methods.
